Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC), BVLOS, Fixed-Wing and Instructor training delivered by Aerial Works ATO. Develop aviation knowledge, practical skills and sound decision-making through a structured training pathway.
Training delivered by Aerial Works ATO
The approval holder is UAV Aerial Works, ATO SACAA/1620/ATO. Theory, supervised practical training and assessments are distinct parts of the training pathway. Before enrolment, the team confirms the entry criteria and assessment arrangements relevant to your experience and chosen course.

01 / Aerial Works ATO
Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC)
Foundational aviation knowledge and practical drone operation, developed through separate theory, flight training and assessments. Restricted Radio Telephony forms part of the training pathway.
Who it suits: People preparing for professional drone flying, and organisations developing a foundation in safe, planned aircraft operation.
What you will learn
Learn air law, navigation, meteorology, human factors, aircraft systems, flight planning and Restricted Radio Telephony. Instructor-supervised exercises cover preparation, pre-flight checks, aircraft control and post-flight actions.
Assessment and entry
Theory examinations and practical skills assessments are distinct from course attendance. Restricted Radio Telephony has its own knowledge and practical assessment requirements. Aerial Works confirms the applicable examination, medical, language-proficiency and application arrangements for each student.
Subjects and practical learning outcomes
Principal subjects
- Human factors, pilot performance, decision-making, stress and fatigue.
- Navigation, aeronautical charts, airspace awareness and basic navigation calculations.
- Meteorology, density altitude and interpretation of aviation weather reports.
- Aerodynamics, principles of flight and South African aviation regulations and air law.
- Drone components, flight-control systems, batteries and electrical safety.
- Command and data communications, flight planning and operational risk assessment.
- Restricted Radio Telephony, radio procedures and communication practice.
Practical training
Practical training develops aircraft preparation, pre-flight checks, control, flight manoeuvres and post-flight actions under instructor supervision. Exercises connect navigation, weather, technical knowledge and risk assessment with the aircraft operation.
Expected learning outcomes
- Interpret relevant charts and weather information when preparing a flight.
- Explain aircraft systems and apply a structured pre-flight and risk-assessment process.
- Demonstrate the practical and radio skills required for the applicable assessments.

Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS)
Advanced training in planning and conducting complex missions beyond visual line of sight. The practical emphasis is on route assessment, mission preparation, crew coordination and simulator-based mission execution.
Who it suits: Remote pilots preparing for BVLOS responsibilities, and crews developing the planning and coordination skills needed for more complex missions.
What you will learn
Study crew coordination, airspace, weather, radio communication, command and control links, route risk and contingency planning. Prepare a mission in Mission Planner, brief the crew and execute the route in simulation.
Assessment and entry
BVLOS practical training is conducted by simulation only. Assessment covers knowledge, mission planning and simulated execution. A pilot qualification does not itself approve an operator, route or mission.
Subjects and practical learning outcomes
Principal subjects
- BVLOS regulations, operating requirements and the distinction between pilot competence and operator permissions.
- Human factors, crew resource management and advanced aviation meteorology.
- Controlled and uncontrolled airspace, aviation radio communication and flight administration.
- Command and control (C2) link requirements, detect-and-avoid systems and contingency planning.
- Route planning, terrain and obstacle assessment, operational risk assessment and mission planning software.
Practical training
Students assess a mission scenario, plan a route in Mission Planner, prepare the crew briefing and execute the route in simulation. Exercises include communication, contingency procedures, flight monitoring, debriefing and after-flight administration. BVLOS practical training is conducted by simulation only.
Expected learning outcomes
- Prepare and explain a route plan with its airspace, weather, C2 and risk considerations.
- Brief a crew and conduct a complex simulated mission using planned contingencies.
- Complete the mission records and explain the applicable operational permissions.

Fixed-Wing Rating
Fixed-wing flight principles, aircraft handling and flight planning for pilots developing aeroplane-category competence. Ground study connects the controls and aerodynamic forces with supervised practical training.
Who it suits: Remote pilots building fixed-wing knowledge and handling skills, including pilots progressing from multirotor experience.
What you will learn
Connect aircraft controls, aerodynamic forces, loading, stalls and recovery with flight-path management. Develop a plan using weather, airspace, terrain and operating-area information, then practise under instructor supervision.
Assessment and entry
The ATO confirms the relevant aeroplane-category training, knowledge assessment and skills-test arrangements. Product-specific VTOL conversion is offered separately by Sky Robots.
Subjects and practical learning outcomes
Principal subjects
- Fixed-wing aircraft controls: pitch, roll, yaw and throttle.
- Lift, weight, thrust and drag; straight-and-level flight, climbs, turns and descents.
- Propeller-induced effects, centre of gravity and weight distribution.
- Stalls, stall recovery and ground effect.
- Aviation regulations, meteorology and airspace relevant to fixed-wing operation.
- Operational-area mapping, terrain and obstacle assessment, and fixed-wing flight planning.
Practical training
Ground preparation and supervised flight exercises develop control coordination, flight-path management and safe planning for the operating area. Handling, stall-awareness and recovery training follow the ATO syllabus and the limitations of the training aircraft.
Expected learning outcomes
- Explain how fixed-wing controls, aerodynamic forces and loading affect flight.
- Prepare a fixed-wing flight plan using weather, airspace and operating-area information.
- Demonstrate the handling and decision-making skills assessed for the applicable training.

Instructor Rating
Preparation for experienced pilots taking on instructional responsibilities. The programme develops the ability to explain aviation subjects, demonstrate practical skills and evaluate student performance professionally.
Who it suits: Experienced remote pilots preparing to teach, supervise learning and assess student progress within the applicable instructional framework.
What you will learn
Develop lesson plans, present aviation subjects and practise teaching demonstrations. Learning theory, communication, questioning and constructive feedback support the evaluation of student knowledge and skills.
Assessment and entry
Presentations and teaching demonstrations provide evidence of instructional competence. Aerial Works confirms the experience, assessment and rating requirements applicable to each candidate before enrolment.
Subjects and practical learning outcomes
Principal subjects
- Human behaviour, learning theory and student motivation.
- Communication, instructional methods and barriers to learning.
- Training objectives, lesson preparation and presentation techniques.
- Knowledge and practical skill assessment, questioning and constructive feedback.
- Student performance evaluation, instructional professionalism and aviation safety instruction.
Practical training
Participants prepare and deliver lessons, present aviation subjects and practise teaching demonstrations. Demonstration-performance exercises develop the sequence of explanation, demonstration, supervised student practice and evaluation.
Expected learning outcomes
- Prepare a lesson with clear objectives and an appropriate instructional method.
- Communicate aviation knowledge and demonstrate practical skills effectively.
- Evaluate student performance and give useful feedback while maintaining a safe learning environment.
Choose the next step in your training
Tell the training team about your flying experience and the work you intend to do. They will confirm the relevant medical, language-proficiency, experience, examination and application arrangements before enrolment. Course attendance alone does not grant a certificate, rating or permission to conduct a commercial operation.
SRV32 G3 aircraft-specific training
SRV32 G3 VTOL conversion and OEM training is delivered separately by Sky Robots. It covers the aircraft and its systems, and is distinct from the regulated courses offered by Aerial Works ATO.
